AYANNA'S PRIORITIES

Investing in Education

Building a more equitable public education system will be one of my top priorities in the State Assembly. I have over 30 years of experience in public education – working as a teacher, principal, and currently serving as a member of the Compton United School District Board of Trustees. That means I have personal experience with the issues facing our schools and students – including a critical shortage of proper funding and staffing.

We need to invest in our children’s futures, and we can accomplish this by:

  • Fully funding public education

  • Increasing pay for classroom teachers

  • Expanding the use of technology in the classroom

  • Bolstering STEM courses

  • Increasing extracurricular programs and the arts and investing in after-school programs

  • Making higher education more accessible for all

I’ll also continue to advocate for equity in early care and early learning, so that our students are empowered with the development tools they need to succeed from an early age.

These strategies have been proven to be successful. During my time on the School Board, Compton Unified posted the #1 graduation rate in L.A. County and the #1 test scores in California among similar schools thanks to intentional investments in student success. In the Assembly, I’ll work to adopt these strategies statewide so that every child in California receives the education they deserve.
